A material-based listing fails differently from a size-label example. If “Material: Walnut” appears under both TRAY-WAL and TRAY-WAL-V2, the checker flags one item-and-variation mapped to multiple SKUs. The seller must distinguish a valid version transition from duplicate identity before combining history or applying cost assumptions.
How is the material scenario constructed?
Use a dummy serving-tray listing with `Material: Walnut` and `Material: Bamboo`. Two historical walnut rows use SKU `TRAY-WAL` with quantities 1 and 2. Two later rows use `TRAY-WAL-V2` with quantities 2 and 1, while the item name and normalized variation remain unchanged. Bamboo uses `TRAY-BAM` consistently. Load current cost records for `TRAY-WAL-V2` and `TRAY-BAM`, but retain the old walnut record separately if historical contribution will be reviewed.
The item-plus-variation map for the normalized walnut label contains two SKUs, so every grouped walnut row receives `variant_multiple_skus`. Unlike the size example, one SKU does not necessarily map to several variation strings. The defect direction matters: here the visible option remained stable while the underlying seller identity changed.
The checker cannot determine whether V2 is a legitimate sourcing revision, a replacement SKU, a channel migration, or an accidental duplicate. That decision requires effective dates, listing change history, cost evidence, inventory treatment, and fulfillment identity.

How do valid version transitions differ from collisions?
A valid transition has a documented reason, non-overlapping effective intervals, an explicit old-to-new relationship, controlled inventory treatment, and deterministic historical selection. A collision has overlapping or ambiguous active use, no approved alias or replacement rule, inconsistent fulfillment identity, or two cost records competing for the same sold option and date.
Do not erase the warning by renaming both historical SKUs to the current value. That rewrites evidence and can attach current walnut cost to older stock purchased under different material price, yield, finish, package, or labor conditions. Preserve historical SKU and cost versions, then map each transaction according to the seller's documented policy.
If V2 only marks a supplier or cost-source change while the physical inventory identity remains continuous, a cost version may be more appropriate than a new sellable SKU. A material change can affect several layers simultaneously. Keep observed purchase price separate from measured consumption and allocated overhead.
Run contribution only after the sold row selects the correct SKU and effective cost record. A portfolio average across walnut and bamboo can hide an expensive material. Report option-level quantity, revenue definition, private cost coverage, and contribution distribution, then aggregate with a labeled sales-mix period.
Stress a credible walnut price or yield change without overwriting the base evidence. The scenario should state exactly which driver changed and whether V2 represents current observed cost or a planning case.
What tests protect the material scenario?
Add a control where the same variation text appears on a different item; the reverse map should not call it a collision because item identity is part of the key. Change case and colon spacing and confirm normalization. Remove the old walnut row and confirm the warning clears for the selected period without deleting history.
Add overlapping and non-overlapping version metadata to the seller's audit process even though the checker does not read those dates. The fix-list workflow should require a reviewer to classify replacement, alias, cost-version-only change, or defect before changing any listing.

Does the checker read effective dates? No. The audit workflow must supply and verify them.
What is the next action? Classify the relationship, preserve history, repair active mapping, then validate costs.
Which evidence supports this material-variation scenario?
Use the Etsy order-item or sold-transaction export for observed item title, seller-added SKU, selected variation text, quantity, and transaction frequency. Use the active-listing export or Shop Manager for current listing, option, price, quantity, and SKU setup. Use the seller's private cost library for material, labor, packaging, fulfillment, and other cost coverage. These sources answer different questions and should not be silently merged into one truth table.
Preserve the export date, covered period, row count, detected headers, mapping version, normalization rule, cost-library fingerprint, and checker version. Verify at least one harmless dummy row from source fields through the exported fix list. A checksum can show that a file did not change; it cannot prove that the seller mapped the SKU, variation, quantity, or item columns correctly.
Classify findings by evidence: an empty SKU is observed in the selected export; one normalized SKU mapping to several normalized variation strings is a deterministic consistency warning; a high-volume SKU without a cost record is a coverage warning under the chosen quantity threshold. None of those findings alone proves accounting loss, listing-policy violation, inventory shortage, or buyer harm.

Privacy and commercial sensitivity for material-variation scenario
The checker needs item, SKU, variation, quantity, and mapping context. Buyer names, email addresses, phone numbers, delivery addresses, private messages, personalization text, and payment credentials are unnecessary. Cost-library values, supplier terms, sell-through, variation mix, and exception lists can reveal commercial strategy even when buyer data is absent. Keep raw CSVs and detailed fix lists in controlled storage. Public reports should use dummy examples, aggregate counts, redacted identifiers, and non-reversible fingerprints. Never paste a private transaction row into an article, issue, analytics event, or community post.
