Use the same product, currency, common cost, return, and target definitions. Solve the marketplace price with its fees, then solve the owned-store price with payment, advertising, and allocated plan and app costs. Keep demand, conversion, customer acquisition, tax, and overhead outside the arithmetic unless modeled explicitly.

Marketplace vs Owned Store Price Parity flow from target contribution and channel costs to required list price, decision, and restoration
Use the marketplace versus owned-store worksheet to target equivalent retained contribution rather than identical sticker prices.

Open marketplace-store fixture

Use the same product, currency, common cost, return, and target definitions. Solve the marketplace price with its fees, then solve the owned-store price with payment, advertising, and allocated plan and app costs. Keep demand, conversion, customer acquisition, tax, and overhead outside the arithmetic unless modeled explicitly. Use a materially different marketplace-versus-owned-store packet rather than renaming the two-marketplace example. Checkpoint 1 in the marketplace versus owned-store worksheet records product, market, currency, target, evidence dates, source version, owner, reviewer, prior price, and accepted formula before the result is interpreted.

For open marketplace-store fixture, preserve marketplace fees separately from Shopify payment, advertising, plan, app, shipping, return, and allocation assumptions; do not call an owned store fee-free.

Use invented or approved aggregate values only. Exclude buyer identities, emails, addresses, order rows, account IDs, payment details, bank records, credentials, private invoices, campaign identifiers, and raw exports from the public marketplace versus owned-store worksheet.

Open marketplace-store fixture: verification test 1

Create one synthetic counterexample for open marketplace-store fixture. Change a single target, cost, fee percentage, fixed charge, funding, shipping, discount, commission, advertising, return, or allocation field, retain the prior packet, and show the charged-revenue, after-discount revenue, required-list-price, contribution, margin, gap, and Block, Review, or Ready effect.

Reconcile the counterexample against current official definitions, applicable account or contract evidence, payment statements, funding and advertising reports, commission records, seller ledgers, a mature return cohort, target approval, owner, reviewer, protected baseline, stop trigger, and restored result.

Explain why the test does not prove customer willingness to pay, demand, conversion, competitor response, lifetime value, payout timing, tax, accounting income, or universal channel superiority.

Marketplace vs Owned Store Price Parity: evidence exercise 1

Reperform open marketplace-store fixture with invented Etsy, Shopify, and TikTok Shop pricing packets. Hold product, currency, common cost, return maturity, contribution target, and evidence dates constant within each pair, then isolate one declared channel difference.

Archive the accepted packet before varying that field. Explain the resulting denominator, required charged revenue, product revenue after discount, list price, modeled fees, contribution, target margin, required-price gap, decision, monitoring trigger, and restoration path.

The exercise remains educational and source-linked. It does not hardcode a universal rate, recommend a public price, approve an account change, or replace market-, category-, plan-, payment-, campaign-, contract-, tax-, accounting-, demand-, or competition-specific review.

Build the owned-store packet without calling it fee-free

The Shopify comparison keeps the same product and target but replaces marketplace economics with the applicable payment path, any third-party transaction fee, advertising, subscription allocation, app allocation, shipping, returns, and seller-funded discounts. Shopify Payments and third-party providers are different configurations; capture the actual plan and provider instead of assuming one generic processing rate.

Allocate recurring plan and app charges over a documented retained-order denominator from the same period. If an app supports several channels or functions, document the allocation rule and sensitivity. A per-order allocation built from a tiny launch week can exaggerate required price, while an annual volume forecast can understate it.

Owned-store acquisition cost is not interchangeable with marketplace discovery. Preserve attributable advertising or another declared acquisition allocation on the Shopify side. Setting it to zero is acceptable only as an explicitly labeled organic sensitivity, not as the baseline by default.

Keep buyer charge, list price, and retained economics distinct

Buyer charged revenue includes the modeled product revenue after seller discount plus buyer-paid shipping. Required list price reverses the seller-funded product discount. Retained revenue adds only verified funding that the seller expects to keep. None of these values is automatically equal to payout, accounting revenue, taxable revenue, or cash received.

Shopify third-party transaction-fee documentation illustrates why the buyer-charge base matters: depending on the current configuration, discounts, tax, shipping, store credit, and payment method can affect the charge. Preserve the actual base in the evidence packet instead of copying the same public list price from Etsy.

When the owned-store and marketplace prices diverge, identify which retained-cost lines create the difference. Do not lower the target or erase acquisition cost solely to force visual parity.
